Prescott Quakers
About the Prescott Worship Group of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
We are a small group that has existed in Prescott for several decades, though the people who attend have of course changed over time. Some of us are members of the Phoenix Monthly Meeting, and some of us who have moved here recently are still members of Monthly Meetings in other parts of the country. Still others of us are not formal members of any monthly meeting at all; the practice of "attending" without becoming a member is common in virtually all groups of Quakers - Quakers welcome everyone, and there is never any pressure to join formally unless one feels led to seek membership. In the past, some of those who attended were members of the Flagstaff Monthly Meeting, and during that time we were an "official" Worship Group under the care of that Meeting. Quaker meetings are usually referred to as "monthly" meetings even though they meet for worship every Sunday. Because traditional Quaker groups do not have clergy to perform such tasks, the "business" of the congregation (finances, charitable work, etc.) is usually conducted by the entire membership together once per month. At the present time, our worship group is not officially affiliated with any monthly meeting, though that may change in the future. Don't be fooled by references to a "meeting" - it's just the traditional term used for both the congregation of a particular group of Quakers, as well as the term for the worship service itself. Please see the "Welcome to new visitors - what to expect" section above for more information on Quaker worship.
